Cracks in teeth can occur for many different reasons.
One of those reasons is often a non-ideal bite, or ‘malocclusion’. Constant subconscious clenching or grinding to establish a comfortable jaw position places intense pressure and force on your teeth.
The teeth that are out of alignment, and therefore contact first or in an unusual way, tend to crack before others.
Here is an example of a healthy tooth, with no fillings or decay, that is severely cracked due to malocclusion.
Cracks provide a ‘highway’ for bacteria to enter the tooth. Eventually, these bacteria can reach the nerve, causing the nerve to die. If this happens, the only two options for treatment are extraction or Root Canal Treatment.
