Occasionally, the nerve in a tooth can die. This often causes a toothache. The resulting aching, throbbing sensation can make eating and drinking unbearable, and prevent you from doing normal daily tasks. You may require pain medication or even antibiotics to settle the discomfort.
While this minimises your symptoms short term, the toothache will be recurring unless the inflamed and dying nerve is removed.
Fortunately, there is a way of removing the nerve that allows us to still save and keep the tooth. This procedure is called Root Canal Treatment.
So, what is Root Canal Treatment? Well, although the nerve of the tooth is dead or dying, the actual tooth is not. In order to save the tooth, we can clean out the small space in the centre of the tooth occupied by the nerve, disinfect the space and then seal it. By sealing the tooth we exclude future colonisation of this space by bacteria.
This treatment effectively saves the tooth. The tooth still has a blood supply coming from the bone and gum and it does not need the internal blood supply from the nerve for its successful function.
At Designer Dental Studio, we feel the words ‘Root Canal Treatment' create unnecessary fear and tension. There are plenty of stories out there about Root Canal Treatment, all telling how painful the procedure is.
To be truthful, there is no reason why Root Canal Treatment should be painful. Our patients experience no discomfort during this simple, straightforward procedure. Some of our patients have even been know to fall asleep during Root Canal Treatment!
