Amalgam is 50% mercury and has a silver or black appearance. Bearing no resemblance to your natural tooth, amalgam fillings are highly visible when you laugh or smile. Nobody enjoys having a mouth full of metal!
That is why Designer Dental chooses not to use amalgam to restore your teeth. We prefer tooth-coloured restorations that blend in naturally. Tooth-coloured materials are also more biocompatible than metal amalgam fillings.
We offer two kinds of tooth-coloured restorations at the practice:
- Composite resin – a shorter term restoration that lasts 5 to 7 years
- Ceramic – a long term restoration that lasts in excess of 20 years
Many of our patients now request that we remove their amalgam fillings and replace them with tooth-coloured restorations. Cosmetically, this is a fantastic way to enhance your smile!
