Ceramic crowns and veneers can greatly enhance the appearance and longevity of your smile.
What is a crown?
A crown (also known as a cap) is like a helmet that goes over the entire tooth, across the top, down the sides and binds it all together. It is bonded in place permanently.
Crowns are used for both functional and aesthetic reasons:
| Functional Reasons |
Aesthetic Reasons |
| Chipped or broken teeth |
Crooked or crowded teeth |
| Heavily restored teeth (especially big amalgam fillings) |
Teeth with large spaces between them; diastemas |
| Cracked teeth |
Stained or discoloured teeth |
| Root Canal Treated Teeth |
Small or partially formed teeth |
| Severely worn teeth |
Defects or deficiencies |
A crown will improve the life span of the tooth, making it highly resistant to further damage or decay. A crown will also overcome any aesthetic concerns. A ceramic crown is a long term investment, and will protect the tooth in excess of 20 years. Crowns are used for both front and back teeth.

What is a veneer?
A veneer is a like a false fingernail for the tooth, and is permanently bonded to the outside surface. Like crowns, veneers can also last in excess of 20 years, but they are generally only used for front teeth.
Veneers are quite thin, and therefore require less of your natural tooth structure to be removed.
Veneers are mostly used for aesthetic purposes, as mentioned above.
How are they different?
Crowns and veneers are almost identical. The only difference is their shape:
- Crowns completely cover all surfaces of the tooth
- Veneers cover only the outside surface (closest to the cheeks and lips) of the tooth
How many will I need?
Crowns and veneers can be used to treat individual teeth, or your entire smile. If only one tooth is treated, that crown/veneer must be made to match the shade and appearance of your existing teeth.
If many teeth are treated together (e.g. the upper ten front teeth), the colour, shape and position of your teeth can be altered.
Whether your reasons for choosing crowns/veneers are functional, aesthetic or both, you can be assured this is the longest term treatment available.
Most crowns for back teeth are made using new CEREC technology. This means the crown can be made and fitted to your back tooth in one appointment. Click here to learn more about CEREC
Is this the ideal treatment for me?
During a cosmetic consultation with Dr Duval we can make the necessary assessments to determine if you will be a suitable candidate for this treatment.
Please complete the following questionnaire to determine if ceramic crowns or veneers may be a suitable option for you.
- My back teeth have large amalgam fillings
- My teeth chip and break frequently
- My front teeth currently have fillings
- My teeth have cracks
- My front teeth have white spots
- There are deficiencies and deformities in the surfaces of my front teeth
- My front teeth are crowded and overlap
- Some of my teeth are grey and discoloured
If you answer yes to any of the above points, you may be a likely candidate for ceramic crowns or veneers. Please contact Designer Dental Studio to schedule a cosmetic consultation with Dr Duval.
